Former Donald Trump strategist Steve Bannon has quit from his role as executive chairman at the right-wing Breitbart News organisation where he built his reputation.
The right-wing antagonist was forced out by conservative mega donor Rebekah Mercer, who is a major financial backer of the former White House political strategist, the New York Times reported.
His resignation comes in the wake of the furore over quotes he made in Michael Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”
Bannon was recently quoted in the book as calling Donald Trump Jr.’s June 2016 meeting with Russians in Trump Tower “treasonous.”
In announcing the departure, Breitbart said that “Bannon and Breitbart will work together on a smooth and orderly transition.”
“I’m proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished in so short a period of time in building out a world-class news platform,” Bannon said in a statement.
