This extraordinary footage shows the moment surgeons celebrate the result of a tense penalty shootout – in the middle of an operation.

Sporting gowns and masks, the surgical team have Wednesday’s Chile v Portugal match on a big screen in a Chilean operating theatre as a patient goes under the knife.

Portugal’s João Moutinho can be seen readying himself to take the penalty during the Confederations Cup yesterday.

But as Chile’s goalkeeper Claudio Bravo makes his second of three saves, the camera pans over to the cheering medics.

It isn’t clear at what point in the surgery the clip was taken from – or what kind of surgery was being performed – but the patient appears to be unconscious through the celebration.

The surgeons’ joy at their team’s success could be short lived however, as there are calls for an investigation after the footage was shared on social media.

Authorities in the South American country have slammed the surgeons “irresponsible” and “without ethics”.

Karla Rubilar, a member of the Chile government’s Health Commission, said: “This is a serious situation.

“There are protocols that should be followed for the security and respect of all patients in all hospitals and health clinics. In this case, all of them were broken.”

Ms Rulibar added that the incident “merits and investigation”.

Chile would go on to win the game 3-0 after three failed penalty attempts by the Portugese.

Bravo, dubbed a hero for his penalty-saving exploits, saved all three of Portugal’s efforts as Chile knocked out the Euro 2016 winners to secure their place in the final in Russia.

The game was watched across the world and was billed in the run-up as being a contest between football superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Alexis Sanchez.

The game had initially finished 0-0 and after another scoreless extra-time period went to penalties.

Chile easily came out on top with Manchester City goalkeeper Bravo the hero after saving three spot-kicks in-a-row. VIA
