A 24 year old woman has died after she was burned to death during an argument with a former lover.
Sandhya Rani, who worked as a receptionist in Secunderabad, was on her way home from work 18:00 local time on Thursday, when her boyfriend Sai Kartik followed her on a motorbike and stopped to speak to her.
Kartik argued with Rani, asking why she refused to marry him. During the heated argument Kartik suddenly pulled out a bottle hidden under his shirt and poured kerosene on Sandhya. He then lit a match to set her on fire and left her to die.
Police in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad have said that they have arrested a man in connection with the attack believed to be Sai Kartik.
Sandhya’s mother, who was waiting for her daughter at home, was devastated after hearing the news. “She was my youngest daughter and had always been a hard worker. We don’t know anything about Karthik,” she said.
There are hundreds of attacks against women involving acid each year in India according to government figures. These attacks are often targeted by jealous partners or stalkers campaigners say.
