The leader of Hamas Ismail Haniya has said that the United States recognizing Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel is a “war declaration against Palestinians”, and called for a new uprising (Intifada).
During a speech held in Gaza city on Thursday, Haniyeh said: “This Zionist policy supported by the US cannot be confronted unless we ignite a new intifada.
“The US decision is an aggression, a declaration of war on us, on the best Muslim and Christian shrines in the heart of Palestine, Jerusalem,” he added.
“This decision has killed the peace process, has killed the Oslo [accord], has killed the settlement process,” he continued.
Haniyeh further stated that Palestinians see Jerusalem as united and the capital of their future state.
“Jerusalem, all of Jerusalem, is ours,” he said.
Israel security are bracing for violence on Friday when is it likely Palestinians will hold demonstrations after Jumu’ah (Friday prayers). Israel’s military confirmed it was calling up reinforcements in the occupied West Bank as a precaution.
The United Nations have also confirmed that it will hold an hold an emergency meeting about the situation in Jerusalem on Friday.
