US President Donald Trump has announced that United States now officially recognises Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The President said the move was “long overdue” and a “necessary condition” for achieving peace.
Trump also confirmed the US embassy in the country would be moved to the city from Tel Aviv.
In a press conference, Mr Trump said he had “judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America, and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians”.
He added he is not taking position on any final status issues, including contested borders. Trump said he intends “to do everything” in his power to help forge a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.
